You can add and delete entire pages from the Pages palette. An active page is shown with a light blue overlay. To select a page to work on, double click on it’s thumbnail. The Pages palette provides an overview of the entire document with thumbnails depicting each pages content, and underneath those, the page number. When you click anywhere within a page that page becomes active.Īn easier way to jump between pages is to use the Pages palette.įor a large multi-page document the shortcut Cmd J may come in handy – it opens a box that lets you jump to a known page number straightaway. You can scroll through pages using the scroll bar to the right of the main InDesign menu. You can not see the document structure when in Preview mode.Īn InDesign document will open on the last page that was worked on, or in a new InDesign document, the first page of that document. Preview mode shows you how the document will print, or be seen on screen. You can also see any objects that “bleed” off the print area or have been placed out of the page edges (on the Paste Board). Normal mode shows you the documents structure – print and bleed area, margins and columns and any additional guides you have created. They can be toggled between by pressing the W key (when not in Type mode). The main viewing modes in InDesign are preview and normal. As with the other two programmes, you will find that you use a minority of the tools a majority of the time. Unique to InDesign are the Gap tool, the Pages tool and the Notes tool. You will recognise quite a lot of the tools in the toolbox from working in either Illustrator and/or Photoshop. Similar to Illustrator, you can place objects outside of the print area, which will not be printed or seen when in Preview (W) mode. In InDesign you are viewing the pages of your document. Having familiarised yourself with Illustrator & Photoshop, you should now be quite familiar with the interface. The workspace is made up of panels, bars and windows that should help navigation and tool selection. These include intent for print or web, number of pages, facing pages (spreads for publishing), paper/screen size, orientation, columns, margins, bleed and slug.Īlthough these parameters define the original document set-up, you are able to amend these later in a variety of ways through the main InDesign menus and the Pages palette. You can specify new parameters in the New Document window. Open InDesign and create a new document File > New… You can also drag and drop a file name or icon into the icon on the dock. With InDesign open, you can open an existing InDesign file by choosing File > Open or File > Browse in Bridge. More often than not you will be creating new artwork in InDesign, but you can also open existing InDesign files to amend them. You can add interactivity, animation and rich media such as video and sound. InDesign also allows you to design a rich array of interactive documents from digital brochures, to eBooks to interactive magazines, choosing from a range of presets for mobile and tablet devices. InDesign is the industry-standard program in which designers can precisely bring together images, graphics and typography to create full colour documents with a range of preflighting and print production options.
